TUTKA BAY LODGE, Alaska | I enjoyed a great few days at the 5th annual 49 Alaska Writing Center Tutka Bay Writers Retreat with Carolyn Forché. I led a breakout poetry session and participated in this intensive, generative workshop led by Carolyn Forché. The Tutka Bay Writers Retreat recruits a different headlining faculty instructor each year, and is a program of 49 Writers, Inc. ("49" referencing the fact that Alaska is the 49th state). Past instructors have also included David Vann, Dani Shapiro, Pam Houston, and Ron Carlson. I'm pleased to have served on the 49 Writers board since its inception. The retreat is held at the Tutka Bay Wilderness Lodge owned by author, chef, and fellow board member Kirsten Dixon.
